Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at fernanda@portaliam.co.nz if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Pregnancy/ Postpartum
We advise that Spinal Energetics is unsuitable during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy. Spinal Energetics is also not suitable during the first 3-6 months of postpartum.

Although this modality is generally considered safe, and alterations to processes can be made, rare cases may release trauma or a strong emotional response which we don’t recommend during these listed terms.

We highly advise that pregnant women in their second trimester only receive Spinal Energetics from a physiotherapist, GP or chiropractor.

This is a kind reminder that you can still have a Reiki experience with me, I will be very happy to do Reiki for you instead, as Reiki has no contraindications and suitable in pregnancy.

Children
Spinal Energetics is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Children between 13-18 need to have their guardian present during treatment.

Elderly
Spinal Energetics practitioners can treat clients up to the age of 75. Clients older than 75 will be treated with extra caution. It is up to the practitioner's discretion to determine these clients' mobility capabilities and assess if they can cope with treatment.

Consent
Every new client must fill out a new client form and sign their consent for their Spinal Energetics practitioner to proceed with treatment.

The following conditions must not be treated by Spinal Energetics:
Each client is obligated to be honest in their new client forms and reveal all relevant conditions to their practitioner. It is then the practitioner's duty of care not to treat these clients and refer them to a specialist who is equipped to advise them.

  • Diagnosed Severe PTSD

  • Severe mental health conditions (bipolar, schizophrenia, psychosis)

  • Currently taking heavy medication that alters brain chemistry (anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, antipsychotic)

Please be advised:

  • Spinal Energetics practitioners cannot treat any person under the influence of any illicit substances or plant medicine.
  • Spinal Energetics practitioners cannot treat animals.

None. There are no contraindications for Reiki.  Reiki is universal love, as more you allow yourself to receive it better you will be. I strongly recommend to receive Reiki once a week.

Yes, having a distance Reiki session is as effective as having an in-person session. This is because energy is not affected by time or distance.

To have a rewarding distance Reiki experience, it is important to follow some recommendations:

Wear comfortable clothes, find a quiet place, turn off your cell phone or any other electronic device, maintain your intention for the session, close your eyes and focus on your breathing, stay relaxed and open during the session, and visualise the Reiki energy reaching you.

Energy is not affected by time or distance. Reiki will flow to you wherever and however you are, even if you are not lying down at the time of receiving Reiki, for example, if you are sleeping, walking in a park, or playing with your child, you will receive the Reiki energy according to yours opening. I strongly recommend not be driving or be using machines at the moment to avoid accidents, as reiki promotes a feeling of well-being and deep relaxation.

Yes, as long as that person has given their permission. It it necessary to respect their free will.

No. Reiki is a complementary therapy that is best used alongside other healthcare providers. Reiki is not a replacement for specialised medical guidance or treatment.

There's nothing you need to prepare for but we recommend that you:

  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Allow yourself to move, stretch, make sounds and release while in session.
  • Connect with your breath.
  • Stay hydrated.

You may feel some of the following reactions for up to a week after a session:

  • Feeling more energised or feeling exhausted.
  • Detoxification experiences such as nausea, body aches, headaches, stomach aches, diarrhoea.
  • Emotional releases like crying or anger.
  • Buried memories coming to the surface to be seen, clean, and released.

After a session, we recommend that you:

  • Listen to the needs of your body, be it eating wholesome food, taking a walk in nature, or getting extra rest and sleep.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Please give at least 24 hours notice of a change to booking time or cancellation. Cancellations within 24 hours will incur a charge of $40. Non-attendance of an appointment will be charged the full fee for service. If you are feeling unwell with coughs, colds, flu, stomach sickness and high temperature, please call us to reschedule your appointment.

Unfortunately, our centre is up a flight of stairs and we cannot offer wheelchair access for the time being. If you have access issues or mobility issues, then we recommend booking an online session for healing services.

Hot stone massage is contraindicated for individuals with acute asthma, acute cystitis, acute infections, injuries, skin diseases, malignant tumours, fever, allergies, inflammatory processes, and patients in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Lymphatic Drainage massage is contraindicated for individuals with the following conditions:

  • Acute infections
  • Systemic edema of cardiac origin
  • Decompensated heart failure, hypertension and diabetes’
  • Phlebitis, Thrombosis and Thrombophlebitis
  • Acute allergic reactions
  • Untreated skin conditions
  • Cancer
  • Bronchial asthma and asthmatic bronchitis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Immunosuppression
  • Renal failure dependent on diuretics or dialysis

There may be complications when lymphatic drainage is applied to people who have any of the contraindications listed above. As the lymphatic system assists the circulatory system in transporting metabolic waste, it can spread an infection throughout the body In these cases, the patient may experience worsening of the problem, delayed or absent recovery and/or the appearance of other injuries.

Lymphatic drainage does not cause fat loss and, therefore, does not cause weight loss, although some patients may lose weight due to fluid loss.

When lymphatic drainage is performed, excess fluids and swelling are drained. Therefore, it is possible to lose weight if the client is bloated. It also greatly improves cellulite that has fluid retention.

Lymphatic drainage reduces fluid retention in areas of the body that are prone to the accumulation of fat, in addition to activating metabolism, favouring the burning of fat stores in the body, although alone it has no power to lose fat.

Before starting the sessions, the massage therapist will analyze the characteristics of the surgery, such of skin and muscle development, edema, scarring, pain and sensitivity. She will analyze also the client, and uses the client’s medical data as a reference, such as the type of surgery performed and the post-surgical time.

Normally, you can start receiving lymphatic drainage massage between the third and seventh day after surgery, because you need to wait a minimum period of time to see how the body will respond and begin the recovery process.

This waiting time is important because in the case of a possible reaction or infection, it will not be spread throughout the body with the drainage movements.

However, we must always keep in mind that each body reacts differently, so it is ESSENTIAL to wait until the doctor approves and recommends lymphatic drainage after plastic surgery.

The main benefits are: Reduction of pain, swelling and bruises. Treatment of fibrosis and skin irregularities; Acceleration of post-operative recovery time; Improved circulation; Enhancement of the results of plastic surgeries such as liposuction and abdominoplasty.

 • People with varicose veins: the affected region should be avoided;

• Use of anticoagulants: avoid deep pressure;

• Intoxication or drug use.

• Patients with severe osteoporosis: attention should be paid to the level of pressure exerted;

• Presence of open wounds: the region should be avoided.

Massages are only allowed by obstetricians after the first trimester of pregnancy.

It is a procedure that is only contraindicated in clients who have high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia or medical recommendation.

If you have any of the following conditions, then a foot reflexology session is not recommended:

  • Foot injuries - consult with your doctor prior to beginning reflexology on the feet.
  • Pregnancy - it's recommend to wait until after the first trimester. Reflexology is extremely safe during pregnancy however in it is preferable to gain the approval of your doctor before we proceed treatment.
  • Blood clotting issues - thrombosis or embolism
  • Open wounds - this must be healed before having reflexology.
  • Infections - if you have athlete’s foot or any infectious or fungal foot conditions these must be treated and healed before having reflexology.

If you have any symptoms or concerns,  and are not sure whether or not you can receive a massage, please consult your doctor, medical authorization is essential to guarantee your well-being.
